MADISON, La., Jan. 6, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved the first generic version of Pfizer's blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, after more than 2 years of testing and approval.

Viagra was introduced in the United States in 1998, and has been available for more than a decade, but the FDA hasn't approved it. In June of 2013, the drug received approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and the generic version has been approved for use in men and women with other conditions as well.
The FDA has not released a statement about Viagra's safety or effectiveness, so it doesn't know whether Pfizer is still on the market. But the FDA hopes it will lead the generic version to make it available in the U. by the end of 2017.
